Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Nigel Fisher

Cod Head Nigel Fisher

The following is an interview of Nigel Fisher undertaken by The Fishy.

Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?

Nigel:
?When I was 10 yrs old - about err...err...1957. Against who? Can't remember. Used to stand in the "boys stand".

Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?

Nigel:
No Question in my mind - Johnny Scott.

Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?

Nigel:
Everton vs Town, Goodison park. Again, can't remember the date (senility) We won 1-0. Wilkinson scored the goal. It's a game I'll never forget - we got a good hiding and still won.

Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?

Nigel:
Newcastle is favorite - atmosphere unbelievable.
Old Show ground WAS least favoured, but, of current grounds, "the dolls house" (otherwise known as Glanford park)

Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?

Nigel:
Best? - the season of the double trip to Wembley (I actually travelled from Malaysia to watch the cup final).
Worst? Can't remember which year, but..the season we were in with a chance of the play-offs at Xmas and got relegated on goal difference in April. (Don't think we won a game in the new year)

Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?

Nigel:
I think when we won at Everton - it even surpassed the Wembley trip. Wonderful day from start to finish.

Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?

Nigel:
Lawrie Mcmenemy - but, I think, if Dave Booth had been given longer he would have taken us very close to the old first division (By the way - did you know he is in Ghana, just now?).

Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?

Nigel:
Only about 4 or 5 - when I'm home on leave. Other games I follow on the net (Sporting-life)

Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?

Nigel:
Wright, Donovan(Don), Keeble, Handyside, Jobling, Cockerill, Scott, Bonetti, Rafferty, Groves, Fell.

Fishy:
Do your children support the Mariners?

Nigel:
ALL my children support town (It's compulsory)

Fishy:
What would I do to improve the current situation?

Nigel:
Speculate to accumulate!! Bring an ageing big name to town. Pay him whatever he wants and watch the crowds flock to see him. I wrote to the list two years ago and recommended that GTFC looked at an "ageing" ex football league star, languishing in the Malaysian league. My letter didn't even attract one comment by any of our list members. Oh yes, the name of the ageing star - Tony Cottee. To me, this one item highlights the gap in skill between the Leicester manager and the current town manager. Sad thing is that the current town manager will never be able to raise himself to the level required to get us even close to the play-offs. Leicester are an 'average' Premier league team, but their manager is eons ahead of ours. We have missed so many of these experienced stars - I'm sure Big Mac could have persuaded Barnes, Wright, Lee Sharpe, Boulds, and many others, to join the crusade for the smaller clubs. Success breeds success, need to go into the Red to get into the Black...'nuff said

Fishy:
What am I doing to help town?

Nigel:
I am a Christian, my wife is a Budhist, I live amongst Muslims - I am bonding as fast as I can in the hope that joint prayers may bring about the salvation of town and, therefore (logically), the demise of Buckley. One will not happen without the other.
