The following is an interview of Glenn Cowlam undertaken by The Fishy.
Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?
Glenn:
I regularly started going in the 1977/78 season. First game I remember going to was actually an away game at Bournemouth in 1973 (father took us all for a weekend away). I believe I went to Blundell Park before this but can't remember any specific games.
Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?
Glenn:
My childhood hero was Bobby Cumming, but I think Futcher was probably the most talented (probably because I to play in defence when I do actually play)
Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?
Glenn:
Town 2 Everton 1, Mickey Brolley's 2 goals and absolutely brilliant atmosphere (also 20k plus in Blundell Park)
Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?
Glenn:
Favourite - Villa Park
Least Favourite - Belle Vue Doncaster
Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?
Glenn:
Best year = 78/9 (3rd Division Championship year)
Worst = Mick Lyons relegation year (can't remember the actual year it was that bad)
Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?
Glenn:
Middlesbrough 1 Town 2 in the FA Cup 1988? I went to college in Middlesbrough, so me & my mates parked in a car park I said was safe. My wife went shopping & met us back at the cars after the game. Unfortunately she arrived before us & sat in the car waiting, and then a large group of Boro fans waited around the car for us to come back (The car said Grimsby motors on it). Lesley was scared witless, & when we all got back they set about us. Fortunately for me my mates told me to get in the car to try & calm Lesley down so I wasn't set on. Thankfully none of my mates were hurt, but I think it's really sad that this was the first thing I thought of as a "memorable" day.
The best day has to be the first visit to the Twin Towers of Wembley.
Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?
Glenn:
In terms of achievement in my memory it has to be Buckley.
Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?
Glenn:
Probably 6-10 at home, and something similar away depending how many are near to Leeds
Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?
Glenn:
Davison
Mcdermott
Croft
Handyside
Futcher
Ford
Cunnington
Waters
Cumming
Drinkell
Mendonca
Fishy:
Do your children support the Mariners?
Glenn:
Not yet but shes only 2 1/4.
