The Player of the Year Debate
BERT:
I went for Caldicott and Butterfield as player and young player.
FRED:
Yeah Stacy has had a great year but I've gone for Lever. He should have been sold if we listened to everyone, last year but thank God we kept him. He's done wonders for someone supposedly out of his depth. I went for Butterfield too but didn't think there was much choice there.
BERT:
A pity there weren't a few fun categories
FRED:
Such as?
BERT:
How about most disappointing player. Ashcroft started well and we had high hopes after last years failings but he hasn't shone like I expected.
FRED:
Well I won't disagree but I'd go for Donovan. His first year in Div 1 was poor and I put it down to getting over a long injury, but his 2nd year hasn't been much better. Then again what about Burnett? How long can we afford to pay dead wood. We are short of staff as it is and cant carry him forever.
BERT:
How about most inconsistent player? I'd go for Gally. Good one week then bad the next.
FRED:
Ah now I'd go for young Buckley there. Good at crossing from the left wing but completely lost with the ball at his feet and a player in front of him.
BERT:
Or Mark Lever? Good with his head but ask him to pass the ball out of defence and he's scary.
FRED:
Most improved player?
BERT:
Danny Coyne for me. Took some flak first two months and now he is heading for an international call up maybe.
FRED:
Can't disagree. Caldicott too, but he's had an award already. Clare is possible, and Butterfield maybe. He is our most saleable asset I'd say.
BERT:
No. Most saleable asset is still Handyside. If he can just come back fit he is real quality.
FRED:
Ok then who is least saleable?
BERT:
Not that easy a question. Depends on what division you sell to. Donovan would sell to div 2 or 3 but not div 1. Kingsley is a bit past it now so I'd go for him. Or maybe Livvo.
FRED:
What about worst tactic by Alan Buckley? I'd say not playing Bradley Allen enough.
BERT:
Just buying small strikers is a bad enough tactic on its own. I'd say playing Dono week in week out has been pretty bad.
FRED:
Last my one then. Most annoying thing about the crowd. For me it's the pontoon boo boys who don't always realise that players are subbed cos they are injured or ill and have a go at Buckley, or worse still the way they ruined young Buckley's confidence.
BERT:
Closet AB fan are you?
FRED:
I just like to see fair play.
BERT:
Well I'll vote for the drum. Bloody racket. Anyway my last category… who will be top scorer next year. I'm going for Allen followed by Clare.
FRED:
You're assuming we'll score more than 1 goal then next year! What's everyone else think. It's just a bit of end of season fun after all.
Now for the vote...
