The Lennie Lawrence Debate

David Peasgood this week finds Fred and Bert have just heard the news about Lennie Lawrence.
Hear their views and YOU decide in our latest 'fishy' poll.

Bert & Fred

The Lennie Lawrence Debate

FRED:
Lennie Lawrence eh? I'd have rather had a bigger name than that.

BERT:
Big names don't always guarantee success. Some of the big names are winners only because they are at clubs which let them buy success. Dalglish was only good with Blackburn's Jack Walker to finance him. What's he done since?

FRED:
So what can we expect from this guy then?

BERT:
Well I dunno but I am optimistic. He went to Boro years ago when they were in freefall and helped them get steady again. I think he got them up into div one again before Robson came along and they started their up/down premiership days.

FRED:
Then it was Charlton yeah?

BERT:
Aye he got them into the premiership first time around didn't he? Certainly he kept them there with a relatively small club budget.

FRED:
I don't know, my memory aint what it used to be. I can understand him leaving them when they went down again, but what went wrong at Luton? Getting the push from there looks poor on his CV.

BERT:
It's a bit of a mystery really. Luton were relegation favourites, no money and no star players.

FRED:
Like town are this year?

BERT:
The same. Anyway he brought a few young lads into the team, made some astute but cheap buys and kept them well up in the division. Mid table I think they finished. Then along came an old boy Ricky Hill and he got kicked out.

FRED:
So he has experience of top flight, he 'aint scared to throw youngsters in and he can work on a shoestring budget if needs be.

BERT:
He doesn't sound such a bad prospect really. Lets hope at least that he's not scared to make speculative buys as well, instead of pretending there's no-one available cos he only buys what he knows.

FRED:
It's all ifs and butts mate. I bet it adds a thousand on Saturdays gate for the Sheff Weds game.

BERT:
It might well make it a 7,000 gate then. Should cheer the bankers up a bit.

FRED:
No need to insult the board Fred.

BERT:
No you pratt, I DID mean the bankers. The moneymen. The accountants.

FRED:
Oh sorry! I thought you meant.. ah well never mind.
