Is football a business or a sport?

Clare to Cobblers

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 23/11/2000

Out of favour Grimsby Town striker Daryl Clare has joined Second Division outfit Northampton Town on a month's loan. It is expected that Clare, who spent three months of last season at Sixfields, will go straight into Saturday's Northampton starting lineup.

Cobblers boss Kevin Wilson has been monitoring Clare for some time, with Northampton making a bid to sign the player permanently at the start of the season. That offer was dismissed by Mariners vice-Chairman Bryan Huxford as 'derisory', although it is thought that an improved offer would be considered by Grimsby.

The move will see Clare resuming his partnership with former Mariners team-mate Jamie Forrester who has been impressive since joining the Cobblers.

Meno Willems Latest

Menno Willems

In other news today, Lennie Lawrence revealed that the next 24 hours will be crucial in his attempts to bring Dutch midfielder Meno Willems to the club for a three-month loan period.

After a short trial, Willems did enough to persuade Lawrence that he has a future at Blundell Park, although the Mariners do not have sufficient funds to finance a permanent move.

However, the Grimsby boss is in no mood to suffer any more transfer hitches as he said "I want him for the trip to Fulham on Saturday but if there's any messing about I can't wait - the deal will be off - it's as simple as that!"

In the event that a deal can not be completed it is expected that Willems will return to Vitesse Arnhem immediately.
