Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Lennie:Nielsen Must Think

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 07/12/2000

Lennie Lawrence has dismissed newspaper speculation surrounding the wage demands of David Nielsen as "ludicrous". It has been suggested that the Danish striker is demanding a wage deal that amounts to well in excess of a quarter of a million pounds per year.

As talks with Nielsen and his agent continue, the Grimsby Town boss told reporters: "The negotiations are complicated and very slow. There has been all sorts of talk in the press and the figures that have been bandied about are ludicrous - there is no way we will be paying that amount." Lawrence stated earlier this week that he believed it was in the best interests of the player that a deal could be worked out which would bring Nielsen to Blundell Park permanently. "Hopefully we can soon come to some agreement on the deal, but if it's not possible then it's not possible. We are not going to be held to ransom and we are not going to be paying out any daft money. The straight-talking Lawrence concluded by suggesting that Nielsen would be foolish to take into account only the financial implications of a move to Grimsby, as he added: "From where he was three or four months ago to where he might be now is a big, big step. If he's got any brains he will examine the football issues as well as the financial ones."
