Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

One-stop Lennie

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 06/01/2001

Mariners boss Lennie Lawrence has revealed that he will be doing everything possible to ensure that this afternoon's FA Cup tie with Wycombe ends in a result. Lawrence is concerned that a replay will only serve to clog-up the already congested fixture list that lies ahead of his team.

"We want to be in the fourth round and a replay would be better than going out," said the Grimsby manager. "The league is our priority, so we don't want a draw, hopefully we can finish the job first time round. "If we did draw, the replay would come in between the games against Stockport and Crewe and they are vital games for us." Lawrence is also aware, however, that Saturday's tie will be no formality as he continued: "They will give it a real go and they are a nicely run little club with a good manager. Ideally though I don't want to play them twice, although that's easier said than done." Meanwhile, Bradley Allen faces an agonising weekend as he awaits a decision on whether or not he will be required to undergo surgery on a damaged ankle ligament. Allen is set to see a London specialist on Monday, who will make a decision on the striker's fate. If surgery is required, it is expected that the striker will go under the knife this Wednesday and will be ruled out for the rest of the season, although Lennie Lawrence is hoping that rest and recuperation will prove adequate.
