Town 1 Wycombe 3

Lennie Lawrence has to do some quick thinking in order to save Grimsby's season as they fell victim to their second successive 3-1 defeat at home, this time to Wycombe. Michael Jeffrey was the scorer for the Mariners late in the first half.

Wycombe, who came into the match on the back of two morale-boosting away victories, ran away with the tie and resigned the Mariners back to square one for the season. The Chairboys now have a mouth-watering prospect of entertaining Wolves at home in round four.

Grimsby once again started out as the brighter side as they controlled the first 25 minutes, but just as on Saturday, the home side succumbed to two major blows as the Adams Park outfit scored two goals within a minute.

Firstly, a fiercely whipped-in free kick and the slightest touch from centre back McCarthy put Wycombe in the lead. Less than a minute had elapsed before the Blues doubled their lead, with Simpson finishing expertly from 25 yards, drilling home into the bottom corner of the net.

The Mariners did pull a goal back before half-time however, with a neat move down the left, and Campbell's cross into the box was chested off by Livingstone and Jeffrey slammed home past Taylor in goal with a super volley.

But, as against Crewe, the game was killed with a third goal by the visitors. A corner had seemed to have been claimed by keeper Danny Coyne, but Rogers somehow bundled the ball into the back of the net to restore Wycombe's two goal advantage, and steal the tie from Town in a game that distinctly lacked a cup-atmosphere.

From then on the Mariners, supported by 3,269 fans on the night, failed to create any more clear-cut chances. The result inflicts more pain on Grimsby who badly need to steady the ship in time to save it from sinking for the season.
