Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Lennie: We Were Best

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 21/01/2001

Lennie Lawrence was delighted with yesterday's performance against Stockport, saying that his Grimsby side were the "better team on the day". Kevin Donovan denied Andy Kilner's men the full three points with an equaliser for the Mariners deep into injury-time.

After much recent bemoaning of the fact that his side has been unable to perform basic footballing tasks, Lawrence was happy to praise his players after yesterday's performance, saying:

"They showed good spirit and application throughout. It's a hard place to come to, but we were the better team today."

Stockport took an early lead through Finnish inernational Jarko Wiss, but subsequently failed to assert their authority on the match.

"Danny never had a shot to save," continued Lawrence, "they had two chances, one they scored from and one that went into the side-netting."

The manager then went on to evaluate his team's overall performance, reserving special praise for striker Steve Livingstone and midfielder Stacy Coldicott:

"Steve Livingstone's a good boy - he really put himself about. I'm also well pleased with Stacy Coldicott after he had to go to right-back. They all had a real go at it and that's a start."

Kevin Donovan managed to prod home a late equaliser for the Mariners, although Lawrence felt as though by that time, his side should have already been coasting:

"We deserved the goal, but I told the players that they had to better around the Stockport box, because it's not every day that you're going to scramble one in during the 92nd minute.

"Even if we hadn't scored, the performance gives you some heart and encouragement. I'm not too bothered about the away form, we need to get a decent win at home now."

"It's a vital point but it looks like it will be one of those seasons when eight or nine sides are scrapping away for survival."
