Gillingham Game Off?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 08/02/2001

Grimsby Town's game at Gillingham is now in doubt with the pitch currently waterlogged and rain forecast over the next 48 hours. Local flooding is also occurring and the game must certainly be a non-starter. Officials have scheduled a pitch inspection on Friday at 9.00am.

The inspection is to be carried out on Friday morning around the time that Grimsby Town's contingent are due to depart from Blundell Park on their journey to Gillingham's Priestfield Stadium. Although a final decision may not be made following the pitch inspection by a local referee from Kent, it would almost certainly give a clear indication of the prospects of the game going ahead on Saturday.

If this game is called off it puts a great deal of pressure on the Mariners in terms of income as postponed games are usually re-scheduled for Tuesday nights which means less in gate receipts and with the number of games that have already been postponed this must be a worry to the club.

The squad too will be under pressure as it seems likely that they will be playing two games a week until the end of the season and players who take a knock in a game will have little chance to recover. This may mean that some of the younger players we have seen little of this season come into the picture if injuries do mount up.

Other News

Blundell Park will not be used for Hull City's match against Leyton Orient on Saturday despite the offer from The Mariner's Vice-Chairman Bryan Huxford to stage the fixture.
