Bolton Preview

By: Dan Humphrey
Date: 19/02/2001

The Mariners visit Bolton's 'space-age' Reebok Stadium on Tuesday night, for a clash which may be ruined for purists, by a pitch which hippos would revel on! The slippy conditions contributed to Blackburn's Garry Flitcroft making 2 rash challenges on Saturday and seeing red as a result.

Bolton may have failed to beat 10 man Blackburn, but they did rest some key players for the Cup tie. Per Frandsen and Robbie Elliott are likely to be recalled from the subs bench, probably at the expense of Charlton and Passi, whilst emergency 'keeper Jurgen Sommer should make way for Man City loanee Tommy Wright.

Following the recent signing of former City and Sunderland winger Nicky Summerbee, the Wanderers wing play could terrorise the Mariners, with Jamaican Ricardo Gardner, a handful on either wing, and easily spottable for his hip-hairstyles and colourful boots, joining Summerbee in providing the crosses. The physical presence of Michael 'super-sub' Ricketts up front, who'll be joined by Hendry, Bergsson, and possibly Ian Marshall/Paul Warhurst at set pieces, could give Town significant aerial problems.

Meanwhile, the Mariner's Wayne Burnett has failed to recover from the facial injury which caused the Grimsby midfielder to leave the pitch after just 12 minutes on Saturday against Burnley, and will miss the chance to face one of his former clubs. Stacey Coldicott, who came on to replace Burnett in Saturday's game at Blundell Park, will start the game in his place.

Apart from the 16 selected against Burnley, Alan Pouton, Richard Smith and Kingsley Black will be hoping to force their way into contention for one of the Mariners' toughest challenges so far this season.

Grimsby Town (from) Coyne, McDermott, D Smith, Enhua, Groves, Donovan, Coldicott, Willems, Campbell, Livingstone, Jeffrey, Croudson, Handyside, Pouton, Black, Rowan, Raven, Gallimore.
