Handy/Burnett Contracts

By: Richard Lord
Date: 21/02/2001

Grimsby Town manager Lennie Lawrence believes that Peter Handyside and Wayne Burnett are part of his future plans at Blundell Park, and both players will be offered new contracts within the next couple of weeks.

This comes at a time when recent speculation has circulated over both players' futures at the club. The former Scotland Under-21 defender has been forced to sit on the bench in recent matches, and the ex-Huddersfield Town midfielder is now aware of Nottingham Forest's interest in him.

"I have Grovesy on-going and then I've got John McDermott to sort out, but then I'll be getting on to those two" said Lawrence speaking to the Grimsby Evening Telegraph. The former Luton manager seems eager to tie the popular pair to the club for the foreseeable future. "As far as I'm concerned, they are part of my plans" continued the Town boss.

Of the Dumfries-born central defender, Lawrence began "Peter hasn't played much because he's been injured and ill. The point I'm trying to make is that just because he hasn't been playing, doesn't necessarily mean he'll have to wait until the end of the season." If Handyside decides to do so, he would leave the Mariners for free.

Lawrence hopes that both players will follow in the footsteps of striker Steve Livingstone who recently signed a new contract at Blundell Park, as the Mariners boss looks to keep together the nucleus of the squad that he inherited in the summer.
