Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Bolton Target Coyne

By: The Fishy News Team
Date: 12/03/2001

SPECULATION is mounting that Lancashire club Bolton Wanderers are to make a bid for Grimsby Town goalkeeper Danny Coyne ahead of March 22nd's transfer deadline. Information from a source close to the club suggest that the Trotters are poised to offer £800,000 for the Welsh international stopper.

27 year old Danny Coyne, who signed for Town in July 1999 from Tranmere, has been virtually ever-present in the squad since - Coyne has played every single minute of every game this season. The Welshman has been instrumental this campaign, capping a series of magnificent displays with a recall to the Welsh Squad for a training camp in La Manga in November, and had looked a certainty to scoop the player of the season awards in May.

Bolton are in desperate need of a keeper with first-choice shot-stopper Jussi Jaaskelainen having been ruled out for the season following an operation on a cruciate ligament injury. The Trotters have employed keepers Steve Banks and on loan Manchester City keeper Tommy Wright in Jaakelainen's absence but neither have look convincing.

Bolton's manager Sam Allardyce was last week turned down by Premiership club Everton in a loan move for the Toffee's keeper Thomas Myhre, and has now turned his attention to Grimsby's Danny Coyne.

If the unconfirmed rumours are true, this will surely have a profound effect on the other players when they see the club's assets being sold off with the Mariners currently occupying a precarious position in the league.
