LL on Deadline Failure

GRIMSBY manager Lennie Lawrence sounded tired and frustrated after failing to land Bermudian striker Kyle Lightbourne today. The Mariners' boss had been in negotiations with the Stoke forward for most of the day, but talks are believed to have broken down over a signing on fee and personal terms.

Lightbourne, who was placed on transfer list at Christmas after an argument with Stoke boss Gudjon Thordarson, has spent two unsuccessful loan stints at Swindon Town and Cardiff City.

On Monday he was granted a free transfer by Stoke in the hope he would find himself a new club by the time the transfer deadline came around today (Thursday).

Lightbourne was unavailable for comment when I contacted him this evening and Lawrence refused to reveal much about the details of their negotiations. "It didn't happen. We tried, nobody's at fault and it just didn't happen," said the Grimsby boss. "Suffice to say it was a last minute thing and it didn't come off. It's nobody's fault and that's it."
