Is football a business or a sport?

Lennie's Comments!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 15/04/2001

"The victory came about because of two things, there were no magical substitutions and it was not the tactics. It was the desire and the crowd." Said manager Lennie Lawrence at the post match press conference.

"It was this that won the game after shooting ourselves in the foot." (referring to the goal conceded in the first half.) "I was gutted at half time being one down when we should have been one up but the victory was deserved, it was a good team effort and justice was done in the end"

Commenting on the table position Lawrence said "I said previously that we needed about 5 wins and we can still finish half way and we can still be relegated. But we can do it"

"There are a few bumps and bruises we will have to look at but we do have players available which we haven't had before which is good"

Asked about the one handed save Coyne made with the score at 0-1, Lennie commented, "This was the turning point of the game, after that the game changed. What we have to do is score the first goal, we have come from behind in the last two games to win and we have done that a few times this season"

Talking about the end of season and which division we finish in Lawrence used Donovan as an example. "I cannot keep Donovan if we finish up in the second division. There is a great difference in the money coming into clubs from outside sources and he would not stay if we are in second division

"I want to keep him but I cannot if we are in second division. I accept that the club do not have a lot of money to spend on players and that's fair enough but I am buggered if we are going to lose anyone because we cannot pay their wages"
