Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Pay Day!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/05/2001

It is bonus time at Grimsby Town with the club keeping its promise to pay the players a bonus for staying in the first division. Top of the pops will be Danny Coyne who will receive 23,000 pounds for his superb efforts this season.

The Grimsby Telegraph revealed today that his understudy Steve Croudson will miss out having spent his time on the bench until Morten Hyldgaard was brought in as sub. The bonus payout will cost the club 250,000 pounds which appears to have been a good investement after Town retained their first division status.

Although 250,000 is a great deal of money, the difference in income between the 1st and 2nd divisions is also significant with first division teams getting 2.2 million plus TV appearance money with the 2nd division getting approximately 500,000.

Each player receives 500 pounds for each appearance during the season and young Jonathon Rowan will get £2,500 which is reported as more than a month's wages.

Bonus payments include

Danny Coyne £23,000
Paul Groves £22,500
Kevin Donovan £20,500
Stacy Coldicott £19,000
Stuart Campbell £18,500
John McDermott £18,000
Steve Livingstone £16,000

This is a good deal for the players and the club and it is good to see players at a "smaller" club reaping the benefits of the game.
