Is football a business or a sport?

Town Release Clare

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/05/2001

As the season has finished the interest will be in the retained list. Who will be going and whom will we be signing? The answer to that is that there will certainly be more loan players than signings with Manager Lennie Lawrence looking to get the most for his money.

Sources close to Donovan say he will be leaving the club unless an agreement can be reached this week on his demands. Our understanding is that Donovan does not want to stay and is looking for fresh ground and may leave the club today.

We can reveal that Darryl Clare has already been released by Grimsby and is understood to be talking to other clubs including Northampton where he spent some time on loan and where he said he enjoyed himself. Gillingham was another club that were interested in Clare and it seems he will have no problem finding another club to take him.

The club has already released Bloomer and Andy Smith and it is expected that there will be more.

Wayne Burnett who is presently on a month-by-month contract is another player in doubt if an agreement cannot be reached with him.

Peter Handyside who is now out of contract has not yet made his mind up and Town fans will be waiting eagerly for news on his position. Up to now Handyside has been reluctant to enter contract talks and it is probable that he will leave the club also unless there is a sudden change of mind. Rumour is that he has another club waiting to sign him. We will keep you updated with this and other transfer news as it comes in.
