Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Premier Push Says Lennie

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/05/2001

"Once upon a time I took a club to the top flight, and it wasn't any bigger than this at the time. If it could be done then, it can be done again." Said Grimsby's manager Lennie Lawrence at the end-of-season awards night at the Winter Gardens, Cleethorpes.

"There's momentum going now and we've got to carry it onto next season,"

Lennie, speaking confidently of next season, obviously feels that Town can make the premiership depending on the commitment of the fans, the board and the players. "Next year it's not enough to be just battling relegation, we've got to aim higher and get ourselves up the table." He said.

If premiership football is within the reach of the Mariners, it would probably be through the playoffs and in that regard Lawrence pointed out "You never know. Burnley aren't much better than us and they missed the play-offs by a couple of points."

"I think we can get halfway or higher, depending on what the board give me and what I can do," said Lawrence. "We've won four out of the last eight which isn't a bad finish considering our run-in."

"If we can have a good start and win four out of eight again, and maybe draw a couple instead of losing them, we will be halfway. Because of the way safety came about it's been a really positive finish and we have to carry that forward." You either move forward or backward, and we're moving forward, that's the feeling around the place."

In a confident mood talking to the Grimsby Telegraph he thanked the Grimsby fans and supporters. "You've supported us really well all season, but it started that Saturday against Tranmere. That game changed in the second half and from that day to this you've been absolutely brilliant for us."

There will be many who feel that Lennie's confidence may be misplaced after narrowly missing relegation this term but if the players continue to be as committed as they have been over the last few games, anything is possible. If the fans too play their part and get behind the team and the club there can be no reason why Grimsby Town cannot be looking to a successful new season.
