Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

The Show Goes On!

By: Bill Osborne

Despite the boardroom battles, recriminations and accusations, the show must go on! In that regard Manager Lennie Lawrence had a meeting today with the board of directors to clarify exactly what the position was regarding players contracts, signings and loan deals and possibly his own position.

After the meeting Lawrence informed Mariners Net that it was "business as usual" saying "I enjoyed a meeting with the Board earlier today to discuss the continuing negotiations I am having with the out of contract players."

"Talks are on-going with several of those players and I am making progress. Gally signed yesterday (two years) and Grovesie will be in tomorrow to sign his contract." (two years)

He also announced that the negotiations for Stuart Campbell to Blundell Park were well on its way to conclusion. He said " The fee of £200,000 stands - Leicester won't budge on that, but I feel it is a fair price for the player and the club is happy to pay that for him. I expect the deal to be done on Monday, when Stuart returns from a week away. "

He also confirmed what was becoming obvious that Kevin Donovan will be leaving the club probably to Barnsley. On this Lennie said "It's criminal that Kevin was not offered an extension to his contract last season. It looks as though he will be leaving us on a Bosman."

On other players he commented " Other talks continue. I've spoken to several players and am meeting Wayne Burnett and Danny Butterfield next week. With Danny, we'll probably be talking about a one year deal because then at the end of it, he will still be under 24 and therefore not a Bosman at it's conclusion."

Lennie will also be looking to extend the contracts of Danny Coyne and Alan Pouton in the near future.
