Butterfield Delays Signing Contract Extension!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 25/05/2001

Unconfirmed reports are that Danny Butterfield may not sign a 12 months extension to his contract, which is the proposal on the table to him at this time. At least two news sites are tipping him to leave the Mariners for a 'bigger' club after scouts watched his performances during the season.

A product of the youth team, 22-year-old Butterfield looks in no hurry to sign after being linked with Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest who both had scouts out watching him.

Also in the frame are Derby County whose chief scout, John McSeveney has watched Butterfield a few times and it is understood that the Rams are still interested in him.

Presently, Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence is negotiating with out of contract players and others whose contracts he wishes to extend. It is expected therefore that Butterfield will give an indication of his intentions shortly. If he does not sign an extension he will still have 12 months left on his present contract unless offers are made for him and the club let him go.

It would appear that Lennie Lawrence wants to keep him and the offer of an extension to his current contract seems to indicate that Lawrence believes Butterfield has a long-term future at the club.

What do you think? Should Grimsby keep him? How do you rate Danny Butterfield?
