The Mark Lever Link to Grimsby Denied- Exclusive

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 11/06/2001

FORMER Mariners defender Mark Lever is reported to be about to leave Bristol City and is looking to return North. Rumours have linked Lever to a return to Grimsby Town with the news that two clubs in the North including Lincoln City have shown interest in him.

Lever has not been in much action with the Robins since picking up a serious knee injury soon after joining them last summer and with Danny Wilson being told to cut his wage bill before he can bring in any new players, Lever is one to move on.

Lever said, "Danny's been as good as gold and very supportive, but he does have to make some room before he can bring in some new lads. I wouldn't mind a move back up north but only if I get the right deal. It's too early to say but I have had a couple of clubs showing interest in me. One of them was Lincoln."

It appears that Lever has been linked with a return to Grimsby as Lennie Lawrence was interested in signing him when he was manager of Luton.

News Reports at that time said:

("LUTON TOWN are reportedly leading the hunt for unsettled Grimsby Town centre back Mark Lever.

Hatters manager Lennie Lawrence has been tracking the 30-year-old for some time and had scouts take in The Mariners' defeat by Tranmere at the weekend, a game in which Lever put in a sparkling display.

The player will be available on a Bosman free transfer in the summer, after transfer talks with the Blundell Park board ground to a halt some weeks ago.")

However, a source close to the player told the Fishy today that the other club showing interest in Lever was not Grimsby Town but declined to reveal which club it was.

Alan Buckley, who knows Lever well, may be interested in Lever as part of his strengthening of the Lincoln City team.
