Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Doug Everitt Claims Board Knew of Hux's Plans!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 17/07/2001

FORMER Grimsby Town chairman Doug Everitt has denied the statement by the board that Bryan Huxford's plans to get financial backing for the club were not revealed to the board, asserting that Mr Huxford was the only director to put money into the club.

Yesterday in a statement from the club the board asked why Bryan Huxford's 'mysterious backers' were not forthcoming during his time as vice-chairman.

But today in the Grimsby Telegraph, Doug Everitt hit back at the claim that fellow directors were unaware of Huxford's plans. Mr Everitt said: "The board members who regularly attended meetings chaired by myself were all aware that Mr Huxford was in negotiation with outside fund managers in an attempt to secure financial support to enable the development of the business in its planned move to a new stadium, and also to satisfy the expansion of the business in all its facets."

"Through your own newspaper (Grimsby Telegraph) under an article entitled 'The future's bright do not let anybody turn off the light' Mr Huxford made your readers aware of the club's financial endeavours. This article I am sure you will confirm was published while both myself, Mr Lake and Mr Huxford were serving members of the board."

".…Loans from other directors where not forthcoming!…."

"On the question of expansion of the equity base of the business I laboured very hard to have the capital base expanded, while at the same time endeavouring to introduce loan capital from certain members of the board and specific shareholders."

"Mr Huxford at the time of my departure was the only director having made loans to the business, although Mr Lake had indicated his willingness to provide substantial funding subject to certain undertakings from other members of the board, which needless to say where not forthcoming."

"I trust this clarifies and places in a more accurate light exactly the position at the time of the resignations from the board of myself, Mr Lake and Bryan Huxford."
