Town Fans To See Jevons In Action Tomorrow.

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 27/07/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN take on Scottish first division side St Mirren at Blundell Park tomorrow and fans will get their first chance to see new striker Phil Jevons. The Liverpudlian is looking to be eventually linked with Steve Livingstone, who misses out against the Saints with a calf problem.

In an interview with the Grimsby Telegraph Jevons said: "Everyone seems to think that Livvo is the main forward and if the gaffer's going to play me with him we'll need to play together before the start of the season. It's been unfortunate that he's been injured."

"Hopefully Livvo will be fit for the start of the season. He's a big asset and I'm looking forward to linking up with him. I'll be excited about getting the shirt on and going out at there at Blundell Park. I'll try and express myself but it's all about what happens when the League starts."

"The manager has said to me that these games are a decent way of getting my match fitness and sharpness up. I need to familiarise myself with the players round me. I'll be nervous but once you're out there you have to get on with it. Every footballer's nervous before a game but once you're out there there's nothing you can do. You just have to play."

"Who am I to say that I'm a guaranteed starter all season? The other strikers did really well (on the tour), especially young Jonny. I thought his performances were very good. With the other lads doing well I've got no guarantees of being first choice."
