Lennie Talks About Saturday!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 03/09/2001

"It is the end of the opening phase of the season, we have 10 points out of five games, and it is a start we could only have dreamed of. The players have worked very, very hard and we are delighted." So said manager Lennie Lawrence after Town beat Barnsley to go top of the divison.

Talking to the Grimsby Telegraph Lennie continued: "Barnsley will play less well and win. We attacked well in the first half but they forced us back, and we couldn't really get pressure on them. They put a lot of balls into our box, but there weren't that many clear cut chances."

"We defended resolutely, and could have got a second goal on the break. We have been a bit fortunate, and the goalkeeper getting sent off gave us a head of steam at the end to keep us going, but it is a great feeling. We know we have enjoyed some fortune in these opening games, and we know there will be other games where we don't get the fortune, but you can't say they haven't worked hard."

"Groves played a great ball down the side, and Jonny Rowan got hold of it and got across. It ran loose and Jevo stroked it in. It was a clear-cut chance, we scored, and we had a little bit of luck when John McDermott cleared one off the line."

"We defended much better, Bruce Dyer was still a threat, but not as much of a threat as last year, but David Beharall handled himself very well and Grovesie was his usual self."

"Danny Coyne didn't have that many saves to make if you look at it closely, but the back four were miles better than they were at Portsmouth. We only succumbed in the last 10 or 20 minutes with 10 men, we are back on track now and that is out of our system, and on we go to Coventry."
