Crowd Favourite Returns

By: Nick Osborne
Date: 10/09/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN FC confirmed today that they had re-signed an old crowd favourite for the rest of the season.

The new signing has been thrown in at the deep end and will be in full flow in tomorrow's fixture against Sheffield United. He has been named as John Smith, a sauce at the club said he had been badly missed and it would be a pleasure to be served with him again.

He has one of the fittest bodies in the first division and will serve the club well if he can keep his head.He usually does once he has settled.

The club had intended to sign him at the start of the new season but the deal fell flat.

The Town manager said he was delighted with his return though it did throw up a problem for the left back position. Competition for all places is a must and the pint sized signing could well go straight into the pot.

The odd thing about him, said the manager, is his nickname, most people called smith are called smudge or smudger, but this lad is the cream of the crop and has well earned his nick name as Mr Smooth.

His arrival at the club, from Tadcaster, couldn't have come at a bitter time. He spent the close season on the sidelines and missed the opening of the season because he and his agent missed the deadline.
