Town Surrender At Palace

By: Richard Lord
Date: 18/09/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN's good early season form came to a dramatic halt this evening as Crystal Palace beat the Mariners 5-0 at Selhurst Park. After Town hit the bar in the first half with the scores at 0-0, it was all one-way traffic as Grimsby's defence crumbled.

Lennie Lawrence made three changes to the side that started the Forest match last weekend. David Smith came in at left-back to replace Gallimore, Beharall was surprisingly dropped to the bench as Marlon Broomes stepped in as his replacement and Jeffrey replaced the injured Jevons up front.

It was the away side who started the better and they rattled the home side's bar early in the match. As a result Palace woke up and went in at half time 2-0 up. Grimsby's excellent defensive record was blown out of the window when Palace added three more goals in the second half.

Clinton Morrison and Douggie Freedman both impressed up front and both got goals. More disappointingly for the Grimsby boss, his side failed to find the net against a side which had conceded 14 goals in the league so far. It turned out to be a disappointing night for the travelling Mariners fans who witnessed their team's heaviest defeat for many seasons.
