The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Cod Head of the Week: Bob Graves

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/10/2001

This site is written by fans for fans and each week we interview a prominent "Cod Head" as part our commitment to fans of Grimsby Town FC.

We regularly need new cod heads, so would appreciate contributions from lifelong supporters of the Mariners. This week's Cod Head is Bob Graves.

Fishy:
Tell us a bit about yourself?

Bob:
I'm also known as marinerbob, I'm married with two kids aged 11 and 13 and I work in the Osmond Stand as a steward (boo)! A couple of sad Town related facts:

  • My oldest son Scott is named after Scott Mcgarvey.
  • The first time I ever took my wife out was to a Town match (Town 2 Gillingham 0) when the home fans where in the Osmond Stand.

    Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?

    Bob:
My dad used to take me in the old Barratt Stand and put me on a milk crate next to the fence. It must have been early 70's although I can't remember my first game - I was too young.

    Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?

    Bob:
Garry Birtles, he still looked quality even though he was at the end of his career.

    Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?

    Bob:
Wembley games apart, Town 1 WBA 0 (Bonetti). I've never known a better atmosphere at BP.

    Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?

    Bob:
    Least favourite Chesterfield, favourite Wolves

    Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?

    Bob:
The best without a doubt was 98 wembley. The worst also without a doubt Mike L***s

    Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?

    Bob:
During the L***s era me and my mate went to Stoke for a cup replay game. We got lost in my old banger getting there 10 mins late. We were already 2-0 down and managed to get hammered 7-0 I think with L***s the tosser playing himself up front. To rub it in Tony Ford even scored against us.

    Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?

    Bob:
    Alan Buckley

    Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?

    Bob:
Every home game usually half a dozen away.

    Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?

    Bob:

    Coyne
    McdermottK.MooreGrovesCroft
    FordCockerillCunningtonGilbert
    BirtlesDrinkell

    Fishy:
do your children support the Mariners?

    Bob:
Unfortunately there not big football fans but they support Grimsby, or else.
