Question of the Week

Next England manager?

My Black And White Hero: Jeff Whitefoot

By: Jim Hunt
Date: 13/11/2001

THE best player I ever saw don a black and white jersey was Jeff Whitefoot. I know it's going back a bit but Jeff was all class, in fact many supporters at that time believed he was too good to be with the mariners.

I believe Jeff came from Man Utd when Allenby Chilton came as player manager. If my memory serves me right Jeff went on to Leicester and played in a cup final.

I'd be interested to hear from some of our older supporters to see if they agree with me and if I've got my facts right.

Not a great deal I can add but it's enough to say that Jeff was a complete footballer who had all the personal and organizational skills. Whenever he touched the ball you always thought something special was about to happen, and invariably it did.

He was class with a capital C.

He didn't stay too long with town but, as I said earlier, I'm pretty certain he went to first division Leicester and played in a cup final.

His position was what was then termed wing half. My memory not being what it should be would put him with town somewhere between 1956 and 1961. Maybe some of your older fans can correct this.

Jim Hunt.

Billo: Whitefoot was in fact signed in 1957/8 season by Chilton for 8,000 pounds from Man Utd and was described as one of the most talented defenders in the country and was an England schoolboy and under 23 regular.

Whitefoot was transferred the next season for 11,000 pounds to Notts Forest and finished the season as an FA Cup medal winner. He spent 10 years at Notts Forest and played 285 first class appearances for them.

Jim Hunt: is a Grimsby expatriate living in Sydney and is an Oz Mariner.
