Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Amalgamation is the Answer!

By: Dave Pearce
Date: 17/12/2001

I WENT to my first game at BP as a ten year old in 1948, but since 1953 I have lived in the London area. Everything I read and hear is for the short term. Sack the board, sack LL, BUY X play Y. I know that's the nature of BB's but most of it is inane.

In Grimsby it seems that you cannot plan long term you can only be panicked by short term events.

The basic problem is there are insufficient people in the catchment area prepared to go through the turnstiles at BP, or any new stadium, to support a first division team. Same problem applies in different divisions to Lincoln and Scunthorpe. Its a fundamental problem of a large low population area.

So the problem spells out the answer. Amalgamation. A stadium appropriately located between the three. A name, (Lincolnshire County?), crowds of maybe 10,000 (and increasing with success), higher income and the consequent ability to compete.

The so called supporters(!) who spend time bad mouthing the management for failing to attract world class players, the board for penny pinching and players for being total failures would have to open their minds to a new concept and stop whinging and waiting for the disaster of non league footie at the best, that will happen in the next ten years at the most
