Bradford Preview

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 01/02/2002

EVERY game for Town from now until the end of the season is a cup final, and a lot will depend on Town's home form. With Bradford lingering in mid table, you’d have thought it could be a winnable game, but there again, this is Grimsby Town!

Home > 2001-2002 Season > Previews > Bradford (h)

The Bottom Line

Town come into the match on the back of a hard fought 1-1 draw with Rotherham at Millmoor on Tuesday night, whilst Bradford lost 1-0 at home to Preston. A win for the Mariners would see them bring Bradford into a relegation fight, whilst a loss would could leave them five points away from the team above them. To say this is a big game would be an understatement.

Dangerman

TownBradford

Michael Boulding

After being restored to the line up on Tuesday night, Boulding nicknamed "quick Mick" for his fantastic burst of pace, will be a thorn in Bradford's defence. Whether he plays up front or on the wing we don’t know, but wherever, his tremendous pace will be an asset, and after failing to score since November, he will looking to hit the back of the net on this occasion.

Ashley Ward

Town know all about the former Norwich, Blackburn and Barnsley striker, who was instrumental (and scored the winning goal) in the game between the two sides in September, when Town lost 3-2. Ward is an "old fashioned" English striker who likes to get his head in and score, whilst also possessing tremendous work rate. One to watch for the Town defence.

Town Team News

  • Steve Livingstone is the only player receiving treatment and not in full training, so John Mcdermott, Jonny Rowan and Bradley Allen could all return to the first team squad, but are unlikely to start
  • Alan Pouton is now in full training, but is a week or two off being match fit.
  • Robert Taylor took a slight knock against Rotherham, but should play.
  • Player boss Paul Groves is suspended so Paul Raven will deputise.
  • Whether Town will play 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 is anyones’ guess, but a system of wing backs away from home and an attacking 4-4-2 at home could be employed.

  • Bradford Team News

  • Bradford have horrendous injury problems to contend with. David Wetherall, Robert Molenaar, Gary Locke, Gareth Whalley and Aidan Davison will all be unavailable due to injury.
  • Manager Nicky Law says that Benito Carbone could play a part in the game, but that depends on whether he wants to sit on the bench!
  • Gary Walsh is struggling for fitness, but could play. Loanee Carl Muggleton has returned to Cheltenham so is unavailable, whilst Nicky Law is trying to sign a goalkeeper on a short term contract.

    Last Time Out

13,778 people watched Town loose 3-2 to Bradford on September 29th last year. Bradford stormed into a two goal lead early on, but a second half revival with Michael Boulding and Jonny Rowan scoring brought the game back to 2-2. Then, with only 4 minutes left on the clock Bradford snatched all three points with a late Ashley Ward header.

    Fishy Prediction

Well, I nearly got the score right on Tuesday, so I am confident of a correct prediction this time. Town have got to win (how many times have I said that this season?) so I’ll go for a 2-0 win.

Prediction: 2-0 to Town. Reader's POMs
