Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

It Is Not Over Yet Says Macca

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 11/02/2002

GRIMSBY Town captain John McDermott and Alan pouton spoke after the Watford game about the challenge facing them in avoiding relegation. "This is the biggest battle we've ever had, and to be truthful a lot of people have now written us off." said Macca

The Grimsby Telegraph report quotes McDermott who said "They will say Stockport and us are down, then one of three or four for the third spt - but while there are points to be played for we are going to try and prove a few people wrong."

"I've been in the team when we have got out of it and we have proved people wrong, and dragged others down, and nothing would give me more pleasure to shut a few of the teams up."

"Our luck has got to change, and I'm sure it will."

"There's no point feeling sorry for ourselves every week, otherwise we'll end up going down anyway. We either give it a go or curl up, and I'm sure it is not in the lads' nature to curl up. We'll be fighting and the opposition in the next home match will know they're in a game."

On the game he said: "I felt strong, but the game got stretched when it went to 10 men - it meant a lot of running and sometimes when you get up there your legs don't do what you'd like, but I'm getting fitter and funnily enough I enjoyed the game. It was frustrating more than anything that we're not getting the breaks, and we definitely need a goal."

Alan Pouton said: "The lads have stuck together all season and we will continue to do that. There are points on the table to be won and we have got to play a few teams that are down there. We have got to make our home games count."

"There is no point looking down and saying 'Well. we've been beaten again', if that is the attitude we take we will never get ourselves up."

"The lads have got pride and we want to be in the first division next season. No player wants to go down, or have a blot on their CV saying they've been relegated. I've had one of those, I don't want another. We are playing for pride to stay in this division."

"The results haven't helped, but it is down to us - the 11 that go on the field and the five on the bench. We can't rely on other results. We have got 13 games left and we have got to try and win as many as we can."
