Ian Turner ex Grimsby Keeper Backs The Mariners

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 18/02/2002

FORMER Grimsby Town keeper Ian Turner was left cracking open the bubbly after returning to Blundell Park for the first time in 27 years on Saturday, writes Stuart Rowson of the Grimsby Telegraph.

As a guest of the Legends Bar, he wasted no time in backing the Telegraph's 'Up the Mariners' campaign for the club who gave him his chance in League football in the early 1970s.

Ian did not take long to voice his opinions on how the club depends on its supporters.

"I still live in Southampton, but I love this place that much I'm thinking about moving back up here. The people are great, and returning has been like the icing on the cake for me."

"The only thing I can never understand about this place is why it's never got bigger. The fans are brilliant and there's no big club in the catchment area around here. This should have been a Premier League club years ago and the crowds were always special when I was here."

"They were tremendous then, and I'm sure they would be again."

He called upon the fans to reproduce that sort of magic to help drive the Mariners to safety.

"They need to be involved and they need to get behind this club. There are clubs going to the wall because no-one is going to watch them. You come to a club like this and it's football heaven. Town might not be world beaters, but it's a great club and people should back them."
