Town Sign Pringle in a Double Deal

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 21/02/2002

GRIMSBY TOWN in a surprise announcement today stated that Martin Pringle will be joining up with Grimsby Town later this afternoon, after already announcing the signing of Andy Todd. Both players are from Charlton Athletic.

Mariners Net stated that Barring any last minute hitches the Swedish striker will become Groves second Premier acquisition from Charlton later today

Referring to the fact that fans have been left guessing for a week, the club statement said: Officials at the club have known about the loan signings for over a week, but have remained tight-lipped, to protect the interests of the club. Manager Paul Groves has already been on record saying that when other clubs are alerted to players that he is targetting, this can undo all of his work.

Clearly to speculate on or reveal names early - as has happened elsewhere -does nothing to help Town in their fight to maintain First Division status. The possibility of other clubs then diving in and 'gazumping' Groves is a real danger. All true Town fans will be doing their utmost to back the Mariners in every way they can, and this sometimes means backing the manager by keeping quiet!

Note: The Fishy were told last night by a reliable source that Martin Pringle was the man. We decided not to publish but place an embargo on it until the club announcement. We were unaware of Andy Todd being involved and we assumed that our information was incorrect until the Pringle signing was announced..
