Pouton Hails Players' Attitude And Commitment!

By: Richard Lord
Date: 25/03/2002

GRIMSBY Town's midfielder and hat-trick hero Alan Pouton hailed the players' attitude and commitment after the 6-2 win over Wimbledon on Saturday. It was Pouton's first hat-trick in professional football, beating the brace he scored for York in 1997.

Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph Pouton said: "It's unbelievable. We wanted the three points firstly, but I think we rounded off a great game with both Michael and I scoring a hat-trick.

"In the past six weeks we have been one of the top form teams in the division. There has never been a question over the lads' attitude, but we had an unfortunate run of bad results that every team gets, only ours was a lot longer.

"The turnaround is a lot to do with confidence. Grovesy has taken over, he knows the lads and their abilities, and he has brought it out of us all.

"I think the game against Wolves last week gave us the confidence, and if we couldn't have spurred ourselves on from there then we shouldn't be playing.

"There was a lot of pressure on us after last week's results, and a lot of people thought we might fall flat on our faces. But, to be fair we came out on top again."

The £150,000 signing from the Minstermen believes that once more the Mariners are defying the odds and proving all the bookmakers wrong in their brilliant Great Escape act.

He continued: "Everyone thinks we'll go down at the start of the season, and we're always odds-on in the beginning.

"We have had a few high scoring games lately, and while you can win games 1-0 and it is still three points in the bag, everyone wants to win by as many goals as they can.

"It gives you that boost when you are scoring goals, and with five against Palace and six today, it gives the lads that bit of belief knowing that we can score, and the midfielders are scoring too."

Pouton concluded: "We have just got to keep on going. We would settle for 1-0 wins from now until the end of the season."
