Football League Nears Compromise

REPORTS in Sunday newspapers suggest that an agreement between the Football League and ITV Digital's owners, Carlton Communications Plc and Granada Plc, will be reached this week.

The TV companies are set to offer around £75m to the League, in an attempt to end the dispute between the parties.

Although the League are owed over £89m by ITV Digital in August, after the ailing TV Company went into administration earlier this month, a compromise of £75m might be acceptable to the clubs, several of whom would face financial collapse without the television revenue which had been promised them at the end of the current season.

The money due for the remaining two years of the three year contract with ITV Digital to screen Nationwide League games is extremely unlikely to be replaced such a lucrative television deal, meaning the League clubs will be forced to reduce costs, most notably the salaries received by some Football League players.
