Lawrence Moving For Coyne!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/05/2002

The Grimsby Telegraph report that Lennie Lawrence is planning a summer clearout of Cardiff City players paving the way for a swoop for Grimsby Town keeper Danny Coyne.

Lawrence wants the £1-million rated Welsh international to boost a second division promotion push at Ninian Park next season after narrowly missing out in the play-offs this year, writes Stuart Rowson.

Coyne is under contract until 2004 and Paul Groves will not want to lose him but with the Town purse strings being tightened following the collapse of ITV Digital the club could be prepared to let Coyne go at a cut-price.

Lawrence rated Coyne as one of the best keepers he'd ever worked with during his spell with the Mariners and has released Cardiff's Lee Kendall as he looks to make way for Coyne.

Lawrence would also be able to at least treble the player's wages with the top earners at Ninian Park picking up £8,000 a-week.

Strikers Kurt Nogan and Paul Brayson have both been released and Lawrence said "There are other players who are still under contract and may move on eventually, but nothing is likely to happen until well into the summer because other clubs won't want to pay their wages."

"A number will be released, sold or loaned out. I would like to cut the squad in numbers and increase the quality overall."
