Town Players Expecting To Say No To Wage Cuts!

PAUL Groves is expected to tell the Grimsby Town board today that the majority of players have refused to take a pay cut despite the situation facing the club.

Manager Groves spoke to all 14 under-contract players yesterday and asked them to take a substantial pay cut - equating to over £1,000-a-week in some cases, says Stuart Rowson in his report in the Grimsby Telegraph today.

But it seems that the players, who are not legally bound to renegotiate, are likely to say No!

Chairman Peter Furneaux has warned that unless the club halve their £3-million wage bill they will be forced into administration and yesterday he said that he had 'positive talks' with Groves and Graham Rodger and the club could have found a way forward.

More talks will be held this afternoon and it could be that the situation at Bradford could have a major impact at Blundell Park as the administrators announced they were making 19 players redundant - effectively cancelling their contracts.

If that action is allowed to stand, and it seems that insolvency laws over rule the League and FA, Town players might be forced to rethink their decision or face the dole.

Billo Says

It is quite natural for employees to protect their income, but if administration occurs they may well have failed to do so.

The players are aware of the situation regarding not only Grimsby Town but the whole of the football league and if they cannot see what is happening in football overall, they must have a very restricted vision.

But the club have to take the hard decisions and if some players are not prepared to assist the club and themselves, they should be marked for the dole, the first chance the club gets to get rid of them. Whoever they are!!
