Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Rant: The Future Of GTFC

By: Alf Evans
Date: 18/07/2002

I have been following G.T.F.C since the days when the late, great Bill Shankley was the manager. I'm now 63 years old and in all that time I have seen many managers and players come and go, some good some bad and some brilliant.

I well remember some years ago a crisis when the supporters club had a go at the board of directors, not without justification. Today nothing has changed!

There is a board of directors running the club who are business men in the town and to them it is just another business interest in which they are only interested in what they can get out of it. They are all in the category of 'big fish in a small pool'.

If they had the interest of the club and its supporters at heart they would have brought in people who had real money to spend, but no, sell the good players so we can give ourselves a decent dividend at the end of the year. That has seemed to have been the attitude for years and it hasn't changed one iota in all the years I have followed them.

A classic example was the statement last year when they were alleged to have had to borrow 30,000 pounds + sterling from a former director to tie them over until the T.V. money came in. What an indictment of pathetic management and control. They should all be brought before the courts under the trades description act.

Regards,

Alf Evans (Now living in South Africa)
