Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Harry's Chin Wag - Week 2

By: Harry Ellis
Date: 20/10/2002

BLIMEY what a week we've had! Two players sent off, a phone-in that told us what we always knew and that some new signings are on the horizon. When the phone-in was in full swing the chairman did answer all the points raised, but then got us all thinking about various things.

The main point was what's going on about the new ground, and the Chairman said things that we already knew. In the end it's down to whether the funding that was there two years ago is still there when all the council red tape is sorted.

But people forget that soon the safety certificate at Blundell Park will be up for renewal, and they will have to bring our beloved ground up to scratch and have to find the money to do it. Now we all know we need the Conoco Stadium but when will it happen, nobody knows.

The Rotherham game proves what our team can do if it pushed to its limit but why can't we stay consistent and then us the fans will have something to cheer about when we go and watch the Mighty Mariners? So I wonder how long the board will put up with the current situation, as it's just a repeat of our disastrous season we had in the last campaign.

If you look at the records of the last two seasons, it is funny how similar they are. Things are becoming more depressing at Blundell Park and it makes you wonder why Paul Groves decided to take it up as his first managerial post, and with the TV money no longer there it makes Groves' job harder getting players to the club because of our wage cap that the manager has to keep to.

On a lighter note remember our Chairman's thoughts about Andy Todd - they are on first name terms still and I wonder if there's a mutual trust there. Because if you heard what the chairman said, reading between the lines, we could see Andy Todd here as manager in the future but I'd prefer his dad Colin instead!!
