Is football a business or a sport?

Gillingham Report Card

By: Dr Fishy

IT was arguably a better all-round performance by the Mariners than the midweek game in which they scored six. They could only muster the one against Gillingham, but they had roughly the same amount of shots on target.

Home > 2002-2003 Season > Report Cards > Gillingham (h)

Coyne: Wasn't tested in the first half much, made one good stop low down near the end and also conceded the goal. Kicking was a bit wayward.

Grade: C

McDermott: Got forward well and assisted Oster down the right. Had a left foot shot in the second half but it ended up being a little tame.

Grade: C+

Gallimore: Confusion seems to reign whenever an opposing team attacks down our left. It leaves Gally puzzled as to who he is supposed to be marking. However, it was a good, solid performance all-round.

Grade: C+

Ford: Battles well in the air without too much success. Only runs when he really has to. He's now capable of playing at the back without an old codger alongside him.

Grade: B-

Gavin: Began hesitantly but grew in stature over the course of the 90 minutes. His legs take time to get going when faced with speed but reminds me of Beharall of last season.

Grade: C+

Oster: I must admit I was surprised with Oster's performance. He didn't appear to be lacking in fitness and certainly looked like the player who was taking to the Premiership five seasons ago.

Grade: B

Campbell: It's being said time and time again, but we're seeing more and more of the old Campbell with each game. He has no strength but has now rediscovered some of the skill he did possess while here on loan.

Grade: C

Coldicott: Ran around a lot, passed forward a fair bit, even by his standards, and nearly scored with a long-range shot. Bit of an erratic show by the midfielder in a positive kind of way.

Grade: C

Pouton: He was all over the place in the second half - left wing, right wing, almost a striker at times when the game became more open. Hustled, harried, did his usual step-over at the beginning.

Grade: B-

Livingstone: Slow, not very mobile, big, strong, atrocious first touch. Not quite all there in a fitness sense but on this occasion the half-fit Livvo tried his best without too much success.

Grade: C

Kabba: The man of the moment. Should have had a hat-trick, he had enough chances to at least score. He created chances also, he created the goal and made a nuisance of himself - which is what we all like to see. Right to the end of the season, hopefully.

Grade: B+

SUBS

Mansaram: Played out the final 22 minutes so he was on the pitch for both of the goals. An erratic Paolo Wanchope, a supermarket trolley, call him what you like. All arms-and-legs kind of performance.

Grade: C

Overall verdict: Town carved out the same amount of chances as they did midweek against Burnley but failed to convert them. Jason Brown annoyed a lot of Mariners fans throughout the course of the afternoon, making one-handed saves on the line, one-on-one saves, blocks, clearances, but he eventually conceded. Town did look by far the better side in terms of creativity, but their work ethic was matched by a determined Gillingham. Just two goals in this game, but I think people will be going home much more pleased about our all-round display - especially the defensive showing (forget the last five minutes).

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
