Town Sign 'Keeper!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/12/2002

GRIMSBY have signed former Everton 'keeper Andrew Pettinger on an 18-month contract. The former Scunthorpe youth player left his home town club three years ago to join the Toffees, before being released from Goodison in September 2002 after being an unused substitute on just one occasion.

18-year-old Pettinger will be Grimsby's fifth permanent goalkeeper, joining Danny Coyne, and Steve Croudson, as well as Leeds United's Shaun Allaway, currently on loan at Blundell Park. Youngsters Paul Fraser and Bradley Hughes are also currently on Town's books.

Paul Groves has been looking to increase his cover in the goalkeeping area, due to the persistent injury problems on Steve Croudson, and the fact that Allaway is only on loan.

Earlier this season there was speculation that first choice 'keeper Danny Coyne's, the top earner at the club, departure was imminent after it was revealed on this site that Crystal Palace had made an offer to the Welsh international to move to Sehurst Park.
