The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

THE Town of Grimsby does not deserve first division football and it will not have it for much longer on gates of 6,000 a week.

It doesn't deserve it because if only 6,000 bother to turn up out of a conurbation of about 150,000, yes, only 4%, then it's clear that the vast majority of people in the area are totally apathetic if not actively against their very own local footie club.

Chances are, that there are more than 6,000 supporters of Man Utd amongst the 96% of the town who don't follow the Mariners. Add on the London, Geordie and Liverpudlian "supporters" and you might have 15,000 potential visitors to Blundell Park. What's wrong with all these folk? Are they all couch potatoes waiting for a heart attack?

And then you have the attacks on the manager by supporters of 20 years standing who admit they wanted Groves in and now want him out. The same man chatters on about us not using the loan system well. What about Oster? What about Hughes? What about Kabba? Successes they have been without doubt. How many players have been approached to come and turned us down because it's Grimsby? Groves has done extremely well on very, very, limited resources.

In the same breath Mr Hamilton blames the board for doing exactly as he wanted and appointing Groves manager. Talk about kettles and black!

Next he wants to bring in a 'head' to help Groves. Where does he think the money is coming from assuming, anyone would want to come or was available? It's no good talking about what we may lose by dropping down a Division if you are only surviving week-by-week, hand to mouth. When the close season comes and turnstile income disappears, then it will be financial trench warfare!

Next he suggests getting rid of Groves and thinks we will be surprised by who may apply for the job. Where does he think the money will come from to pay up Groves contract? Potential replacements will come from that roundabout known as unemployed (sacked) former managers including a few names like Wilkinson, who couldn't hack it at relatively well off clubs.

We have to face the facts. The mariners have been punching above their weight for many years and all credit to them for that.

Reality, as a consequence of apathy, is almost upon us. Division 2 and 3 beckons and we may all feel relieved when it arrives.
