We Need A Result Against This Lot!

THE Grimsby versus Wolves games have provided plenty of talking points over the past few years - and now the Mariners are desperate to achieve a good result against one of the division's form teams.
Where Molineux has been a bit of a bogie ground for Grimsby, Blundell Park has provided more memorable results. Town generally do okay against the midland giants at home and there have been some examples of that in recent years.
Back in the 95/96 season, the Mariners reached second place before Christmas and then went on a run of 15 games without a win - that was until they entertained Wolves at Blundell Park.
Shakespeare, Groves and Forrester all grabbed a goal each to win the game 3-0 after a storming second half shooting towards the Pontoon. The following season unfortunately failed to yield a similar result.
It was the opening day of the 96/97 season and Steve Bull stole the headlines with an opening-day hat-trick. After going 2-0 down before half time, Mendonca struck to give Town some hope, but Bull got a third to make it 3-1.
The following 97/98 season was spent in the Second Division so there were no clashes between the two sides. So it was in March 1999 that the Mariners once more hosted the Premiership Wannabes.
Davison had fallen out with Buckley, Andy Love mysteriously injured himself in the warm-up and so it was rookie Steve Croudson who made a name for himself in one of the more entertaining 0-0 draws to be played out by Town.
It was the penultimate game of the season and Wolves had to win to stand any chance of reaching the Playoffs - but some fine keeping by Croudson and a steady defensive showing meant Grimsby gifted sixth place to Watford.
The 99/00 season didn't have many victories or many goals for that matter in the run-in. Town scored just five goals in their last 15 games of that particular season but it did include a 1-0 win over Wolves.
It was in the days of the Daryl Clare / Mark Nicholls strike partnership. Kevin Muscat elbowed the latter right in front of the dugout and everyone witnessed the incident - apart from the officials, that is.
In September 2000 new boss Lennie Lawrence had the chance to continue Town's good home sequence against Wolves in the second round of the League Cup. Town were losing 2-1 with ten minutes to go but goals from Rowan and Allen turned the tie on its head and the Mariners won 3-2.
The only blip in what has been an impressive home record against Wolves was the League game later that season. A deflected free kick and an impressive Proudlock strike earned Wolves a 2-0 victory.
In December 2001 another evening game at home to Wolves saw Phil Jevons put the Mariners ahead early on in spectacular style with an overhead kick, before Groves scored an own goal as the game finished 1-1.
This will be Grimsby's sixth evening match against Wolves out of the last eight meetings - and when it's been an evening kick off, Town have never lost. More of the same on Tuesday night please.
