Pick The Winner!

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 10/04/2003

Here it is, the vote you Fishy readers have been waiting for ALL season. Your vote for The Fishy Player Of The Year.

Throughout the season, after every match report, you have had the chance to vote of the Player of the Month and these votes have help us pick the 6 players on the Question of the Week. This award will be presented to the player at the Winter Gardens on Tuesday April 29th.So here are the six nominations:

GEORGES SANTOS: League Appearances 20
Brought to the club via a friendship with Danny Coyne, Georges has been a ray of light in our appalling defence and has shown that he can play in midfield as well. His contract is up in the summer and hopefully he will stay.

STUART CAMPBELL League Appearances 40
Stuart has shown, what we all knew, that he could play to a consistent level week in week out, and could be called up soon for his country Scotland, after playing for their Under -21 team he will always be knocking on the door. If he carries on scoring like this he will finish top scorer this season.

TERRY COOKE League Appearances 14
After his well known background in football Via Man Utd youth team and its famous names, Terry where ever he has played has underachieved and this has upset a few Town fans wanting to know why he doesn't play more regularly for the Mariners, but if Terry does play he will be well welcomed by ALL Town fans

ALAN POUTON League Appearances 25
Pouts has already finished his season due to injury and a big suspension, but is already being missed in our midfield. The way he plays is a credit to him as he wears his heart on his sleeve and it shows the by way he plays and the cards he gets every season. The thing we will miss from him this season is his famous step over while running with the ball

JOHN McDERMOTT League Appearances 30
After 16 years at Grimsby Town, and becoming the record holder for the most appearances in a Town shirt, Macca is a favourite with the Town fans and has become a legend in his own right. He has had the chance to move away from Blundell Park a few times in the past but has stay loyal to the Mariners. People also forget that Mick Lyons released Macca after his YTS had finished but re-signed for Town later.

PAUL GROVES League Appearances 28
Bought by Alan Buckley from Blackpool, the Gaffer has played just over 600 games for Grimsby Town. Then 18 months ago became the fourth player manager Town had in their long history, and due to financial constraints due to the withdrawal of ITV Digital money last summer, he has had a hard job to try and keep Grimsby Town in Division One

So there are the six nominations and you can vote for your favourite using Question of the Week and in the next few days we will be able to tell you who's won this most coveted award. So please make sure we get plenty of votes for the best player in the famous black and whites stripes of Grimsby Town!!
