Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Key Players Written Off!

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 21/05/2003

MARINERS' legend John McDermott is set to sign a pre contract agreement with Hull City, a deal that signals the end of an era at Blundell Park. Macca has been offered a 2-year deal with an option of another year in what will be his final season in football.

The Town skipper is one of the longest single club servants in the Nationwide League and has been with the Mariners since the 85-86 season. He is out of contract in the summer and would have to take a 50% pay cut to stay with the Mariners. Macca is the first high profile departure of the summer and will be followed by Player of the year Georges Santos who looks as if he will not be returning to Blundell Park.

This will put enormous pressure on Paul Groves who has lost his two key players and although he has been given funds to sign up to 10 new players, he will find it difficult to find replacements of the same quality of Macca and Santos.

Phil Jevons

The Grimsby Telegraph revealed today that talks have been arranged with Phil Jevons, his agent and the club to re negotiate Jevons' present contract to more of a level that Grimsby Town can afford.

The former Everton front man is on a high basic wage plus appearance money and Everton receive payments every time he plays for the Mariners and it is rumoured that £100,000 will be due if he plays another game for Town.

Town want his contract renegotiated because under the present terms, they cannot afford to pay his wages. "His agent recognizes that there is a problem and he is getting back to me on this matter." said chairman Peter Furneaux.
