Question of the Week

Next England manager?

Farewell Livvo

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 03/07/2003

STEVE Livingstone has left Grimsby Town after signing a one-year deal with Carlisle United. Paul Groves has agreed a deal to sign a much sought-after striker from the lower leagues as a replacement and that may happen today.

Livvo told the Grimsby Telegraph that he turned down the chance to link up with old boss Alan Buckley at Rochdale in favour of a move to Carlisle.

"I went for a chat with the manager, Roddy Collins, and it was all done and dusted within an hour. It's a fresh start and a good challenge and I hope I can give them something back. I've dropped down a division but I've spoken to the manager and he's told me what he wants and I think I can give them that."

Livingstone thanked the fans and admitted he was sad to leave Blundell Park after nine years and eight months at the club.

"I've been on a big downer for the last few months and I've been there for the best part of 10 years. The writing has been on the wall for the last six or eight months and I was being told one thing and not getting anywhere."

"I had good times at my other clubs but it's been the best 10 years of my life at Grimsby. I've made lots of friends and there are too many to mention but I want to thank them all."

"It was us against the world and that was the Grimsby attitude that I loved. Every game was like a cup final and if we dropped a bit we'd get beaten."

"But I hadn't had a phone call from anybody since the end of the season so I knew I had to sort myself out."

Paul Groves paid tribute to Livvo's service: "He's another one of those players who have given the club fantastic service. But he's had a good offer from Carlisle and it's a good opportunity for him. I wish him all the best and want to thank him for what he did for us while he was here."
