Is football a business or a sport?

The Price of Success

ON Saturday, Grimsby Town face Queens Park Rangers in the first round proper of the FA Cup. There are those who believe that Town should concentrate on the league games and perhaps not risk first team players in a cup game.

Now that may seem sensible to some, but a club like Grimsby, that do not have a great deal of cash in the bank, cup games are an important source of income.

In addition to the gate and sponsorship income, each team can earn significant sums of money by having a good cup run. Money that can be used to strengthen the squad.

The table below shows how much a good cup run is to a club.
