Is football a business or a sport?

Buckley Lures Donno

ROCHDALE Manager Alan Buckley has invited former Grimsby Town winger Kevin Donovan to train at Spotland, with the understanding that he may be offered a contract. Buckley, who has already signed Donovan for both Grimsby and another former club West Brom, has a penchant for former players.

31-year-old Donovan had been training at Blundell Park immediately after being released from a disastrous contract with Second Division Barnsley, but any talk of a second spell with the Mariners proved just that.

The Halifax-born winger left Blundell Park on a Bosman, hoping to help the Tykes return to the Premiership, and picked up a lucrative contract with the Yorkshire club. In fact in his first season at Oakwell Barnsley were relegated, and Town stayed up.

Since then Donovan has suffered serious injuries, loss of form, and the wrath of the Oakwell faithful. Donovan finally left Oakwell through "mutual consent" last month after having been given a free transfer and no club coming in for him.
