Suddenly, Wales looked every inch the nation currently sandwiched between Mali and Jordan in the FIFA listings; the nation ranked 58th in the world. Suddenly, Paul Jones was an ageing goalkeeper, Darren Barnard a Grimsby Town full-back, Andy Johnson a limited midfielder, and John Hartson a one-dimensional striker. Even Mark Hughes, the architect behind the team's recent transformation, suddenly seemed utterly lost.

Sometimes it pays to look down the Leagues rather than up them and buried in the Nationwide Second Division today is a bet that has 'back me' written all over it. Plymouth scored seven in thier last game and are at the top of the table while Grimsby were beaten 4-1 at bottom of the table Wycombe. Mystic Meg is not required for this match.

When a load of illiterate villagers got together in the 11th century near Grimsby and decided to kick the head of one of their defeated enemies around to pass an hour or so, they surely had no comprehension that, with but small change, their barbaric practise would become the number one leisure activity of an entire century. Ironically, the collection of peasants that day, by a complete freak of chance, were the twenty most talented footballers who ever existed - even Pele would have had a problem getting a game off them. Tragically, they were all killed the next day by Baron Edwin of York, who decided to slay them all for being heretics, and his gain was the world's loss. For the record, Baron Edwin's direct descendent is Jimmy Hill, so the episode does still have ramifications for the modern game.
