The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Time To Get Started!

THERE were no surprises at the Blundell Park press conference today. The club confirmed the appointment of Russell Slade as the new manager of the Mariners! (Is there anyone out there who didn't know?)

Earlier in an interview on Mariners Net, Slade said;

  • "Any players that don't want to stay here, for whatever reason, can go anyway. We want players that want to play for this football club and that are committed to this football club. We will create a right work ethic from bottom to top."

  • "There are a lot of players out there that are out of work. I have formed a list and we are very hopeful that we can attract some decent players to the club."

  • "There are going to be a lot of unhappy players come the 7th of August. These players have got to be sensible, they've got to be looking to take wage cuts. They will be lucky to be playing, they will be lucky to get a shirt at a football club."

  • "The target will be getting in that top six, top seven, which means that we will be in a play-off position. There's a lot of work that has got to be done between now and the start of the season. To put a side together with the right blend isn't going to be easy."

    The news of Slade being appointed as the manager, has not been greeted with delight by everyone, but as Furneaux said earlier in the piece; "The announcement, whoever it is, will not please everyone!" How right he was! That is to be expected from a varied group, like football fans, all with their own personal ideas and opinions. But that is how it should be.

    But if there is one thing they should collectively do, it is to support the new man, get behind him and the team, and help get the Mariners back into the second division as the first major aim.

    No good will come of those, who are either opposed or disappointed with his appointment, to continue their verbal attacks or criticisms of him until they have had the opportunity to see him in action with Grimsby Town.

    Not at Notts County, Sheffield United or Scarborough. That is over! Today is a different day at a different club in a different division.

    The decision has been made. There is nothing anyone can do to change it. We have to live with the reality. Slade is now OUR manager at OUR club and it is now up to OUR supporters and Mr Slade to get the show back on the road again.

    It is time to get started on the road back! Get your cheque books ready. Season tickets will be on sale soon!
